Life hasn’t always been easy for TCI Digital Media Arts major Joshua Rodriguez. Born blind in one eye, the East New York native has persevered, however, and is now set to graduate in June 2016. His career goal: To become a video game designer so gamers like him can enjoy them.

What career are you looking to build? My ideal work would be as a game designer. But I would also like to work in graphic design, as a tattoo artist or for some big name company like Michael Kors, Nike or Adidas.

How did you know TCI was the right school for you? I was looking for a graphic arts school. My cousin referred me to TCI. Meeting with the teachers and seeing the work along the hall, I knew this was where I wanted to go.

How has your mentor at TCI helped you grow? She has pushed me beyond my creative limits. She has helped me to strive and push myself to go beyond what I love to do, to branch out and be creative in other aspects of design.

What experience here has helped you grow most as an individual? Getting my work critiqued as a designer. It allows me to show the work I have done and be advised on what adjustments I may want to make.

What have you learned at TCI? I learned website coding, database creation, Adobe CS6 and CC. I also learned from being in student government that everyone at TCI is family.

What advice would you give to a student who is struggling? Seek help from the TCI Learning Center, take a breather and take things one at a time. Also, get a planner and set up a to-do list.

Any final words? Overall, TCI is a good school. The professors here care about the students a lot. The security staff at the front desk gives us a warm welcome and makes sure everyone presents their TCI ID before gaining access to the school. The administrative staff and higher ups in the building are all here for us as well to mentor us and give advice when needed.
